Poetry Collection: Conversations with Magic Stones

by Vivienne Tregenza

Conversations with Magic Stones commemorates the life and work of Barbara Hepworth, fifty years after her death in a fire at her home in St Ives, Cornwall.

It goes on to explore the Hepworth themes of figures in the landscape, loss, resilience and transformation, moving from the poet's home in West Cornwall to the Isles of Scilly and back again.

Vivienne Tregenza won the Formal Poetry Prize at Poetry on the Lake, Orta, Italy and has been placed or shortlisted in competitions including the Bridport, Frogmore, Hippocrates, Second Light, Ver Poets and Welsh Poetry Prizes. In 2004she was shortlisted for the Cinnamon Press 'New Voices' Award and also highly commended in the Geoff Stevens Memorial Poetry Prize. Vivienne is well-published in UK journals.

'A sunlit, scrubbed and chiselled conversation between a poet and a sculptor, between now and then, linked by motherhood and love.'

'Part celebration of Barbara Hepworth's hard-fought achievements as a women artist, part exploration of the inward creative life itself, these shining, beautiful poems meditate on love, mothering, attachment and solitude set within their shared Cornish landscape, 'granite-strong, wind-strung.'

Pippa Little

'Starting with a celebration of Hepworth, the way her sculptures counterpoint space and substance, the way 'nothing gives way to everything', these crafted lyrical poems go on to honour a similar poetic structure echoed in the landscape of Vivienne Tregenza's beloved Cornwall. Ultimately, like Hepworth's art, these poems open to what lies beyond: their lasting impression is of light - much light - and epiphany.'
